One of the most pristine places on in the world Waipio Valley is a hidden glade on the Hamakua Coast. Hilawe Falls which is Hawaii's tallest waterfall at 1,300 ft cascades down into the valley. Waipio Valley was home for many Hawaiian King's and the valley was a place of great religious significance to ancient Hawaiians. It was raided in the 1800's by a King from Maui called Kahekili II. Kahekili II burned the palace and other sacred monuments. Exploring Waipio Valley can be tricky because it is home to one of the steepest roads in the world. It is a public road but four wheel drive is required to enter. Having a vehicle with hill descent mode mades the drive a breeze, but four wheel drive is away must to make it through the rough terrain. Please note it's important to remain cautious at the road narrows at points.
